It was not the kind of numbers one would expect, but the planned protests against the economic and societal hardships in Nigeria were held today in Lagos and Abuja. The originally planned Tuface protests that gathered much momentum on social media took a massive hit when the face of the protest and afro-pop star Tuface Idibia pulled out of the protest yesterday.
His decision to pull out was blamed on “security reasons” and it inadvertently dampened the spirit of most Nigerians who had rallied around the African Queen crooner when he called for the protest. However, some other celebrities like Seyi Law and Charley Boy swore to carry on with the protest whether or not If Tuface protests, and managed to draw out Nigerians in their thousands to the national stadium in Surulere from where they marched en route Ojuelegba to the National Theatre in Orile-Iganmu Lagos.
Even though the protest in Abuja, the city of power did not attract as many people as the Lagos version, people still came out in their hundreds to support the #IstandwithNigeria protest. The Abuja protesters were met with opposition from the pro-Buhari #IstandwithBuhari campaign at the Unity Square in Abuja but still managed to hold a peaceful protest.
Meanwhile, Nigerians who were in their offices or their homes also took to social media to show their support for the protest. Find some of the interesting ones below:
