The Nigerian army has released a statement on Thursday saying that it has taken two of its officer into custody after a video surfaced of them on the internet showing them as they beat up a physically challenged man for putting on a camouflage shirt.
The video in question that blew up on the internet revealed two perdonels of the Nigerian Army as they whipped a disabled man while onlookers watched on helplessly.
In a statemnt released by a spokesperson of the Nigerian Army, Sani Usman on Thursday, the Nigerian Army condemned the incident vehemently. According to Usman, The Nigerian Army has “zero tolerance for acts of indiscipline and unprofessional conducts especially in relation to violation of human rights, we wish to further state that the soldiers involved have since been identified and apprehended,”
Brigadier Usman firther revealed that the men have been charged with assualt by their commands. He also reiterated that the Nigerian Army has expressly warned soldiers to stay away from stepping on the rights of citizens so as not to tarnish the good image of the military.
He thereafter called on the public to see the ugly occurence as an isolated case “which is not a true reflection of the Nigerian Army”
In Nigeria, it has become a punishable offence for civilians to wear camouflage.
